I visited Pepperdine for the first time in about ten years since my California exodus in 2017. The fires of 2025 had just been extinguished, and one could hear the whine of Marine One helicopter flying overhead, surveying the devastated Pacific Palisades. The Pacific Coast Highway had been closed to the north and the south, and thus, Surfrider Beach and the lagoon were eerily empty.
The great limestone cliffs rose like legions of phoenix. As I surveyed the burn-scarred Malibu hills, I wondered how many times they’ve burned in the millennium before, and how many times they will burn again. I wondered how many times the brush would grow back, and how many times the people would rebuild.
My eyes wandered over the green, moss-covered stones, tumbled about and licked by soft onshore waves. I looked out over the sapphire ocean. Even though the land had been burned, there was still mercy: panoramic, 360-degree views of beauty. The coastline will always be plastic and malleable—shaped by acts of God and forces of nature, reminding me that the only constant in life is change.
